Coin History

Proof Quarter Eagles of Bela Lyon Pratt's semi-unique incuse Indian design were struck in the Philadelphia Mint from 1908-1915.  Most issues in this series display some form of matte or sandblast texture to the individual coins' surfaces, but the 1909 and 1910 were produced with a satin-like, Roman Gold finish.  None of the proof production methods employed in the delivery of these issues struck a particularly receptive chord among contemporary numismatists, and many coins were melted as unsold at the end of each year.  As such, proof Indian Quarter Eagles of all dates are considerably rarer than their original mintages might suggest.
