Alice Cooper (b. Feb 4, 1948) is an American singer & actor. With shows that include pyrotechnics, guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, reptiles & more, he is considered The Godfather of Shock Rock, drawing from horror films, vaudeville & garage rock to pioneer a macabre & theatrical brand of rock designed to shock audiences. His band consisted of Alice (vocals), Glen Buxton (lead guitar) & Dennis Dunaway (bass guitar), Michael Bruce (rhythm guitar) & Neal Smith (drums). Their ‘69 debut album had some success. In ‘70 they had a hit with the song I'm Eighteen & hit their commercial peak with album Billion Dollar Babies (’73). They disbanded in ’75 & were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. His solo career started with ‘75 Top 10 hit concept album Welcome to My Nightmare. Based on a child’s nightmare, it has narration by horror film star Vincent Price & was the soundtrack to his show. His accompanying ’75 TV special The Nightmare gained a Grammy Award nomination for Best Long Form Music Video & is regarded as a ground-breaking rock history moment. After hit albums Alice Cooper Goes to Hell ('76) & Lace and Whiskey (’77), he entered treatment for alcoholism. In ‘78, a sober Alice used his treatment experience as inspiration for album From the Inside, spawning the Top 20 hit How You Gonna See Me Now. He refers to his early ’80s records as his "blackout albums" (as he cannot remember recording them due to drugs & alcohol). Album Flush the Fashion (’80) had an edgy new wave sound & yielded the Top 40 hit Clones. Album Special Forces (’81) had a more aggressive, but consistent new wave style. ‘82's Zipper Catches Skin was pop punk-oriented with high-energy guitar-driven songs & his most unusual subject matters for lyrics. ‘83 saw the haunting epic album, DaDa. In mid- ‘83 he was hospitalized for alcoholism again & cirrhosis of the liver (remaining sober since). In ‘84 he was cast in the horror film Monster Dog. Album Constrictor ('86) featured the hits He's Back (for the film Friday the 13th Part VI) & fan favorite Teenage Frankenstein. Alice then launched The Nightmare Returns Tour to rave reviews. The taped shows in ‘86 is viewed as the definitive Cooper concert film. Album Raise Your Fist and Yell ('87) had an even rougher sound as did his classic song Freedom. The Raise Your Fist and Yell Tour (inspired by slasher movies) was a controversial spectacle. In London he nearly died of asphyxiation after a safety rope broke during rehearsal (where he pretended to hang himself during the execution sequence). ‘89 Grammy-nominated album Trash saw the hit Poison. The Hey Stoopid (‘91) album saw less success as glam metal's popularity declined due to the grunge explosion. In the early ‘90s he guested on records by bands of the time such as Guns N' Roses & appeared as Freddy Krueger’s stepfather in the film Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare ('91). Album The Last Temptation (’94) deals with issues of faith, temptation, alienation & frustrations of modern life. The 2000s saw a sustained period of activity with extensive touring & the release of a stream of albums to critical acclaim, Radio show Nights with Alice Cooper began in 2004, showcasing classic rock, personal stories about his rock icon life & interviews with rock artists. Dirty Diamonds (2005) became 1 of his highest charting albums & in 2008 he released his 25th studio album. Along Came a Spider. Alice Cooper was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, received the living legend award at the 2006 Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards & the Rock Immortal award at the 2007 Scream Awards. He released his 21st solo album Detroit Stories in 2021. The Rolling Stone Album Guide describes him as “the world's most beloved heavy metal entertainer".
