This remarkable textile is a one in a million !! Extraordinary hand worked embroidery border and center cartouche. This textile conveys opulence and grandeur only the way that velvet and heavy embroidery can a very regal textile. The color purple has been associated with royalty, power and wealth for centuries. In fact, Queen Elizabeth I forbad anyone except close members of the royal family to wear it. Purple's elite status stems from the rarity and cost of the dye originally used to produce it. This textile dates from the 1800's. The embroidery on this textile is Wonderfully designed, BEAUTIFULLY hand worked!! The embroidery uses both wool, some cotton and metallic thread. Thick heavy embroidery. The ground of this textile is a low pile , purple ( a red purple, rather than a blue purple) silk velvet. The tone is rather halfway between burgundy / marron and purple. This textile comes from an important collection , this I'm sure. So many wonderful embroidery stitches used!! Seeding, satin stitch, coral stitch. Whoever created this master piece knew what they were doing and the design is both elegant yet bold and dramatic !! The top and bottom are unhemmed. I believe this textile would have been used as a bed cover, however it too have been a wall hanging , drape etc. Difficult to say. The list of possibilities is endless. This is a heavy textile, it weighs approximately 9 pounds .
There are areas on the back, where you can see that a linen backing was used for the embroidery, and others where it was not. I'm not sure why that was !! A very very special find. Ideal for private use or collection ~ If you're looking for a show stopping decorative textile, look no further!

MEASUREMENTS: This textile measures 114 inches long by 85 inches wide.

CONDITION: This piece is in as found , not freshly laundered condition. There are broken threads in place ( please use the zoom feature to view the condition closely. It's in beautiful condition , but not without signs of time and use. There is a light fading area to be expected. ( please see photographs) This textile has not been laundered and it has a scent of rather a smoky cedar ?? ( NOT cigarette smoke but more a faint wood stove . I remember viewing the 18th century Indian chintz textiles at the Victorian and Albert museum , walking down the hall where the textiles were stored, I could smell wood stove on all textile pre1940 !! Anyway, this textile can be aired outside etc. It's generally in fabulous condition indeed, but not without signs of time and use , often inherent in these wonderful antiques ~
