DWIGHT NESMITH artist.

Vintage seed sculpture bird figure by Dwight A. Nesmith of Manhattan, Kansas. Mr. Nesmith was known as "The Bird Man". He was born 3/12/1920 and died 1/5/2010 at 89 years of age.

He was born on March 12, 1920 the son of Aura C. & Neva V. (Porter) Nesmith. He joined the United States Army Air Corps where he was a B-24 pilot in WWII, flying 40 missions over the Pacific Ocean during WWII. Dwight later earned his B.S. in engineering from Northwestern University. He retired in 1983 from Kansas State University as an Associate Professor of Engineering after 35 years.

Dwight was a life member of the Optimist's Club and was a large supporter of the Manhattan Civic Theatre and Kansas State University. He was very well known for his sense of humor and his artistic craftsmanship. He was an invitee at the National Crafts Festival at Silver Dollar City for his seed bird sculptures. One of his greatest passions was as an after dinner speaker; even being a keynote speaker at the Centennial Celebration at Notre Dame University. His loving family honors him for the father, friend and exceptional man that he was.

This figure is 16” tall and is constructed of natural seeds and pods, and is mounted on a piece of wood type base.

The sculpture is signed "D Nesmith" and dated '83 on the bottom.

The sculpture is in very nice condition. I couldn't really see any missing seeds. There is some mild shelf dust.
