Japanese Rough Potato – Metaplexis japonica (Milkweed Family – Asclepiadaceae) is a rare ornamental climber to 8m, perennial frost hardy to zone 6, so best to treat it as an annual in the UK. Beautiful, showy, pale purple flowers in the second year after sowing (about 15 months to first flowers from seed). It is in flower from Jul to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs).

Good in most soils. It can grow in semi-shade or full sun. It prefers moist soils.

Seeds generally germinate readily. Germinate in 75-85F, moist soil, indoors before the last frost. Transplant out into final spot when large enough to handle and warm enough.
