The Chicken Ranch La Grange 1905 Vintage Men's T-Shirt

Description The brothel that would become The Chicken Ranch opened in La Grange, Texas, in 1844 and was run by a widow known as Mrs. Swine out of an old hotel near the saloon. The brothel was successful for over a decade, but closed during the Civil War when Swine several of her girls were run out of town as Yankees. In 1905, Miss Jessie Williams took over the brothel and left the hotel, moving to a house on the outskirts of town that would become known as Miss Jessie's. In 1915, Williams purchased eleven acres of land on Rocky Creek Road, which would become the permanent site of the brothel. During the Depression, Williams had to lower prices as customers dwindled and implemented a "poultry standard," charging one live chicken for each sex act. The number of chickens at the brothel soon exploded, and the place became known as The Chicken Ranch, with Williams supplementing her income by selling surplus chickens and eggs. While an illegal operation, the brothel operated successfully from 1905 until 1973, primarily due to an unwritten pact of mutual coexistence with law enforcement and elected officials that excluded drunks and criminals, but welcomed police and politicians. It's also rumored that Williams provided tips to the sheriff based on gossip and boasting by clients each day, which certainly helped, I'm sure. The business served as the basis for the 1973 song La Grange, and the 1978 Broadway musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, as well as its 1982 film adaptation.
