The brothers Henri-Louis and Philippe Auguste operated under the name "Courvoisier Frères" from 1842. In 1882, the name changed to "Courvoisier Fils" when more brothers joined the partnership. Specializing in high quality watches, they were commissioned by the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds to build a watch for Prussian King Frederick William IV; this is said to have been the flattest watch in the world at the time. The tourbillon movement invented by the Swiss Paul Loichot, which he turned inside the case to make it visible on the dial side (Swiss patent no. 30754), was registered by the Courvoisier brothers under the trade name "Mobilis" on July 4, 1905 with the patent number 19062.
