African ethnographic antique: Senufo/Dogon Bronze/brass divination ring. Provenance

A beautiful bronze/brass* ring depicting a coiled cobra. Snakes are a common motif found in African art. The ring was created using the “lost wax” process. Each ring is original and unique as the mold is destroyed after each casting. This ring has considerable age.

It can be difficult to attribute the ethnic identity of these rings due to the mobility of populations within the Sahel area of Africa and the shared use of motifs. (See Cutsem pages13-15).
