Kees Van Dongen enthusiastically agrees to illustrate a work by Saint-Georges de Bouhélier, if the iconic Ida Rubinstein (1885-1960) agrees to pose for him.

“[…] For me it would be a joy to illustrate your mystery and to have Ida Rubinstein as a model. But I don't know if this great lady would agree to be drawn by me because she never responded to various invitations from me and I would like to be certain on this point before talking to my editor who is a young and enterprising man. So I expect a word from you. You know that I am completely devoted and that on my side there is no difficulty in overcoming […]”.

In 1909, Serge Diaghilev hired Ida Rubinstein in the Ballets Russes where she played the role of Cleopatra. It was a triumph. This interpretation inspired him to Souvenir of the Russian Opera season to Kees Van Dongen.

Wolfgang Beltracchi, the infamous forger, took advantage of this general interest and much later produced a portrait of Ida Rubinstein in the style of Van Dongen.
