Long correspondence of General Paul Azan which spans more than 35 years, and covers his entire career. It is mainly related to the participation in geography congresses, the writing of articles (in particular on Abd-el-Kader), his passion for Algeria. A letter is written from the front: “Your kind letter comes to me at the most interesting point of the Front. We are full of hope and confidence there, I don't need to tell you that. My poor arm is far from being in good condition, but I am happy to make myself useful and to give an example of energy […]”. [He had been seriously injured on May 10, 1915]. In 1921, he was appointed head of the 6th regiment of Algerian riflemen. “I am very happy to be back in this Algeria that I love, and whose history I have continued to study for 25 years. I find friends there everywhere, particularly in our Society, of which I am a life member, and I will gladly associate myself with your work […]”. He makes himself the defender of the Algerian people. “The changes made mean that the most susceptible of the Natives will not, I believe, be offended by the current wording. I have considerably “softened” General Voirot's opinion, by deleting passages which were nevertheless of interest, and I leave the responsibility for his opinion entirely to the former commander-in-chief […]. I am, as you know, particularly the friend of the Indigenous peoples, of Si M'Hammed ben Rahel and Cadi among others; but one cannot, because of them, falsify the history of these characters! The most literate have read Sallust […]”.

A postcard shows him at the head of the 6th regiment of Algerian skirmishers.
