Designed by chief mechanical engineer Edward Thompson, 410 of this main line locomotive were built between 1942 and 1952 for medium mixed traffic work on the London and North Eastern Railway. The first batch was allocated to the Great Eastern Railway section and operated Liverpool Street - Harwich boat trains as well as hauling East Anglian expresses. Later batches were allocated to the lines of the former Great Northern Railway and Great Central Railway. It was the LNER's equivalent to the GWR Hall and LMS Black 5. The class was withdrawn between 1961 and 1967 with two members of the class surviving into preservation.
BRAND: Lined black was the standard livery for British Railways mixed traffic locomotives from 1948 until 1966.
