Yes, I reckon there's an art to noodling in the same way that there is an art to all the other aspects of improvisation- from familiarising oneself with substitute chords, altered scales, pick-ups etc.

It's great to be able to isolate these elements in order to get to grips with their quirky qualities.

Noodling, for want of a better term, is about ditching zipping scales- about interrupting the melodic flow and introducing a tonal distraction in the form of a series of repeated notes. Just to break things up, just to add a bit of variety. That's how I see it. 

This book has a silly title but it's more interesting than the title suggests!
