The Original earrings have cabochon sapphires surrounded by 8 diamonds with a single diamond linking to a larger cabochon sapphire surrounded by 9 diamonds. These earrings differ from a similar pair of earrings which were surrounded by smaller diamonds without the central diamond between the two clusters.
These earrings were first worn by the Princess of Wales in the mid-1980s, often accompanied by the fabulous Sapphire Choker.
In 1994, the Princes of Wales wore the Sapphire and Diamond Earrings for a photoshoot by Patrick Demarchelier, taken for her 33rd Birthday, which appeared on the cover of the July 1994 British Vogue.
After her passing in 1997, the Earrings were inherited by her sons and remained publicly unworn for the next 25 years.
Kate Princess of Wales. has worn similar earrings and it is likely that they are all inherited from the collection of her late mother-in-law. These Sapphire and Diamond Earrings were only publicly seen at the Trooping the Colour Ceremony in 2022.
Most recently, Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings were worn by Princess Kate when she and Prince William arrived in Boston
