A fine copper engraved original antique map of The British Isles.

 An attractive and scarce map with original outline hand colouring. Dated in the plate.

This is the first state of the map, individually published, later to be included in the Atlas Cartes de Geographie in 1676.

The title is displayed in a rococo cartouche and the coasts of France, Belgium and the Netherlands are shown in some detail.

A small engraved sea battle from the Anglo Dutch war is recorded in the North Sea which is dated 1665.  This marks the Battle of Lowestoft which occurred the same year as publication.

 Fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration. Centre fold as issued. 

Approx. 18.5" x 13.5" (470mm x 340mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.

 Printed on hand laid paper which remains stable and robust, blank verso.

Pierre Du Val (1619 -1683 ) was a French cartographer and engraver born in Abbeville but based in Paris. As the nephew of celebrated cartographer Nicolas Sanson his future in the world of map making was secured. He initially formed a partnership with print seller Pierre Mariette and went on to become geographer to King Louis XIV.
