H.M.S. OCEAN.
In his Majesty's Navy there are six other powerful warships practically identical in essential features with H.M.S. Ocean, the subject of our picture. She is a first-class battleship of 12,950 tons displacement, steams eighteen knots an hour, is armoured over two-thirds of her length, and carries four 12-inch guns, twelve quick-firing i oopounders (6-inch), some 12-pounders, and several smaller guns. The duties of such a vessel in time of war include blockading an enemy's port, bombarding his fortified places, and, perhaps the most important duty of all, engaging and destroying his armoured ships. In peaceful times, which all citizens desire, her functions are principally confined to patrolliiig the seas of the world and keeping the peace.
