Up for sale, a 1958 Gibson Les Paul Special in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. 100% original save for a refret and corresponding bone nut, this Gibson retains its notably clean original TV Yellow nitro lacquer finish, with untouched solder joints and a quintessential late '50s neck profile carve. As befits its reputation, this is an extremely acoustically lively instrument, with the smooth, muscly growl and fundamental warmth of Hondurdan mahogany. The Les Paul Special has a dynamic, touch-sensitive quality, with equal parts glassy treble clarity and wooly P-90 bark. Each position on the three-way pickup selector has a distinct, vital quality, with a lively chime attributable to the lightweight wraparound tailpiece. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and weighing 7lbs 11oz, this Les Paul Special plays exceedingly well with low action and fresh 10-46 strings. The one-piece Honduran mahogany neck has a round, substantial "baseball bat" C-shaped profile carve, measuring .890" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is a dark cut, refretted with slender fretwire that has a hair more meat than the “banjo” fretwire used by Gibson on most single cut Specials. The new frets show virtually no wear, with just one spot of finger wear into the rosewood on fret 2, and the guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4" scale with a straight neck and responsive, optimally adjusted truss rod. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width, upgraded to bone. On the headstock, the original silkscreened gold “Les Paul Special” text is present, along with the stock truss rod cover, and the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines retain their stock buttons. Both original P-90 pickups are present with original winds, clean bobbins bobbins and original covers, metering at 7.8k ohms in the bridge position and 7.77k at the neck. The wiring harness boasts untouched solder joints, original bumblebee capacitors, and IRC pots. The hardware includes the original lightweight aluminum wraparound bridge and stoptail posts, and all of the original plastic parts are intact too, including the dished top black bonnet knobs, pickguard, jack plate, back panel, amber switch tip, and switch gasket. An unusual but documented variation on the norm, this Special has the same rubber gasket around the switch typically seen on Gibson's higher end archtops of the era in lieu of the usual Treble/Rhythm ring. The nitro lacquer TV Yellow gloss is 100% original with no touch-up or overspray, and the guitar exhibits none of the headstock or heel repairs often seen on this model. Cosmetic wear is limited to a couple circular marks of note in the finish on top behind the bridge (likely caused by a coiled instrument cable), some small nicks on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back lower bout body edge, and a spot of light buckle wear central to the waist. The gloss on the neck profile is extremely smooth. A vintage, non-original hardshell case is included.
