The Antonov An-225 "Mriya" (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-225 "Мрія", translated as "Dream") is a Ukrainian super-heavy cargo jet aircraft, powered by jet engines, developed by the Antonov Design Bureau in Kyiv. Until recently, it was the largest aircraft in the world in terms of maximum takeoff weight, payload capacity, and wing area.
The aircraft was built as a single prototype in 1988 for the purpose of transporting components of the "Buran" spaceplane.
The An-225 "Mriya" was used for transporting oversized and heavy cargo, such as airplanes, ships, drilling rigs, and also for humanitarian purposes. The aircraft also participated in firefighting operations.
The An-225 "Mriya" has been one of the most renowned aircraft globally. It remains a symbol of the Ukrainian aviation industry and one of the most powerful aircraft ever constructed.
On February 27, 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the An-225 "Mriya" was destroyed as a result of shelling by Russian forces at the Gostomel airport, where it was parked. The aircraft was completely devastated. This is a tremendous loss for the Ukrainian aviation industry and the world at large.
