The Welsh Feathers, sometimes known as the Prince of Wales Feathers, has long been associated with Wales and Royalty. It is the heraldic badge of the Prince of Wales where three white ostrich feathers emerge from a gold coronet..
Its use is generally traced back to Edward, the Black Prince (1330–1376), eldest son and heir apparent of Edward III. Edward Royal arms featured a “shield of peace” bearing three ostrich feathers probably the shield he used for jousting.
The brooch features the Prince of Wales emblem, and has been worn by previous Princesses of Wales dating back to 1863. The Prince of Wales Feathers, has long been associated with Wales and Royalty.
Due to an oversight the brooch left the royal vaults when Edward Prince of Wales abdicated in December 1936, Wallis Simpson.took the brooch and it remained with her until she died in 1986.
After her death the brooch was sold at auction for a charity. It was bought by Elizabeth Taylor for a staggering $565,000. She had been a friend of Wallis Simpson and said, “The Duchess wanted me to have it.”. Elizabeth had very strong connections to Wales being twice married to Richard Burton the famous Welsh actor.
On the death of Elizabeth the brooch was again auctioned with an estimate of $400,000 - $600,000 because of well documented history it actually achieved $1.314.500 to an anonymous buyer.
By royal custom the brooch would almost certainly be worn today by Kate Middleton the current Princess of Wales but as the brooch is not available Kate wears a completelv different version.
There have been many different designs of this brooch, some very simple and other jewelled versions costing many thousand of pounds.
We believe our version closely replicates the 1863 version. Specifically designed by our team it is mainly copper with rhodium and 18k gold plating, the feathers and stems are encrusted with 5A cubic zirconias. The effect is stunning and will grace any outfit.
