This superb, oversize, ancient lock has a simple riveted wrought iron construction and weighs over 2Kg. It would have been made by a local blacksmith.

The iron plate onto which everything is fixed measures 202mm by 220mm, that's a huge 8 by 8 5/8 inches. The thrown bolt is 404mm long or 15 7/8 inches with a simple tooth-ratchet mechanism that would have been turned by what must have been a huge key (missing). This is bolt enhanced with some stamped, parallel line decoration and is held in place by an iron spring that would be lifted as the key turns. The plate and mechanism comes to 60mm or 2 3/8 inches deep and the spike that locates the key protrudes a further 33mm or 1 1/4 inches beyond this.

A really rare, early, collector's item.

There is a break in the strap holding the bolt to the plate and the mechanism is seized. I think this is easily fixed but I haven't done anything to this lock as it is in a wonderful dry untouched condition.
