Fleets have been gathering and having themselves reviewed by Royals for centuries. In 1346 Edward III
cast his eye over more than 1000 of his ships. George III was rowed out in a barge when it was his turn in
1773, though he had only 25 ships in all to inspect. In 1914, the line stretched for 40 miles. In 1953 the
Queen saw about 200 warships on her Coronation Review. This year, for her Jubilee Review, she saw just over
100. Such Royal Reviews are reserved these days for Coronations and Jubilees - so who knows when the next one will be. Who knows if there will even be a navy at the next jubilee. All the more reason then to
wonder at something so archaic and yet something so splendid. It happened down at Spithead just over a
week ago and weve rushed in a special pictorial record for this weeks Magazine. It could well be the last time we see as such a sites
