History of the Rainbow Flag
The rainbow flag has been a symbol of the LGBT movement since the late 70s, when an openly gay man and drag queen, Gilbert Baker, designed the first rainbow flag. Although it is now also known as more specifically a gay pride flag, the rainbow flag was initially designed for, and is still used for today, the representation of the entire gay community. The various colors on the flag came to represent the huge diversity and strong unity within the LGBTQ+ movement. The flag was first flown in 1978, at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade.
