Frederik Pohl (1919-2013) may have been quite literally the most formative single person in modern science fiction. His first published foray into science fiction was published in 1939 and his final novel was published in 2011 just two years before his death. While continuing to write, he also had a long career as an editor of magazines and anthologies and as an agent for many other science fiction writers. Among many, many honors, he won seven Hugo awards, two Nebula awards, three Locus awards and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award twice. Three of his Hugos were for his work as editor of The Worlds of If Science Fiction. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1998 after being named a Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) Grand Master in 1993. Throughout his life he was an active presence in Science Fiction Fandom, regularly attending local conventions and Worldcons throughout his life.
