Includes 20-page booklet A frontline of two trombones was an atypical combination for jazz prior to the groundbreaking collaborations of J.J. Johnson (the fi rst and primary exponent of bebop on his instrument) and Danish-born Kai Winding (a brilliant trombonist in his own right). Although they both participated on a number of sessions together from 1949 to 1954, J.J. and Kai s success as a duo began with the album Refl ections, which was taped on August 24-26, 1954. From that point forward while continuing to record their own individual projects they took time to explore the myriad of possibilities of this new two-trombone format. Both J.J. and Kai participated on numerous individual projects during the time they made their albums together. Johnson s most typical format during those years was as the leader of a quartet backed by piano, bass and drums. Winding, however, continued to explore a trombone-heavy front line, forming an octet with at least three additional trombones. That is the format heard on our bonus album, The Incredible Kai Winding Trombones, on which Kai assembles two tenor and two bass trombones. Bill Evans participates as a sideman on both The Great Kai & J.J., and The Incredible Kai Winding Trombones.
