This handsome 3LP box set from Spanish Telefunken (6.35345-1/3, Spanish pressing, blue label, stereo, insert included) features Henri Honegger’s remarkable accounts of Bach's 6 Suites for Solo Cello recorded in Copenhagen in February 1959 (producer: Michel Bernstein / engineer: Peter Willemoës).

The sound of the cello has often been likened to the human voice and few have made it sing in these Suites as did Henri Honegger, a pupil of Pau Casals. He is not a reticent player, and his full-throated Bach playing, full of ardor yet wonderfully refined, is truly extraordinary – this is exalted Bach playing by any measure.

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. The box top does not close completely down by itself; there's no obstruction or damage, it just doesn't naturally close all the way. However, if one places the set on a shelf with other LPs, the box will remain closed (all the way) just like any other. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the whole remains extremely attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the 1-page full-size insert is EX. It is free of markings or tears.

The condition of the 3 LPs is NM- throughout. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really these are very fine copies and playback is excellent across all 6 sides. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this set. Overall, these rate as fine NM- collector's copies.
