The Union is a Brigantine, a sailing ship of about 40m in length, two masted and square rigged. These ships were much in use during the 18th and 19th century as a merchant ship and light warship and served very well as coast guards and for short trips. Most of them were privateers: Merchant ships which had been armed and equipped as vessels of war by particular merchants, and furnished with state commissions to cruise against and annoy the enemy by taking, sinking or burning their ships.
