The Classic Gannex 1960s Men's Rain Coat- 40-42/Med

This is a(n apparently) Very rare example of the signature version of Gannex's Raincoat during this period - Made famous by Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson - and subsequently worn by numerous film stars ... including Paul McCartney & John Lennon - amongst others.

Gannex - was a part of Kagan Textiles - owned by Lord Kagan: A colourful socialist-industrialist - who had close connections that spanned the worlds of finance/politics, entertainment and UK/European royalty.

Gannex's coats and raincoats had unique/distinctive designs & incorporated innovative, in-house, weather-proof textile technology in partnership with their own design teams. They were regularly seen worn by high-profile politicians/celebrities & other public figures. And their products were not cheap. However, they shouldn't be mistaken for modern-day 'designer'-status labels. Their products, were simply perceived as hardy-practical wardrobe investments by their (generally) well-heeled customers ...

They were technically cutting-edge - and of a quality and focus on quality & detail - that could not easily/cost-affectively be reproduced today ...

This rare example was acquired from the original owner in about 2008:

I can remember he told me that in 1966 he had been a junior Maths lecturer at Manchester Uni; and as he wanted to polish-up his 'campus image' AND hopefully get noticed by his Head of Department - he bought this particular raincoat. He said it cost him a whole month's salary.

Tho, he only wore it a handful of times before he came down with a serious medical condition - which left him away from the campus for around a year: And, when he returned to the university he was to find "in the intervening time - everything had seemed to change: Suddenly everyone was growing long hair & beards - and flares" - and therefore he never wore it again ... .

When I got it, it was hand-washed, before being worn only 4-5 times; before being put it away carefully until now. Despite always being really valued -  and may be that was the problem (... #!?)

So I'm confident this really is an unusually good, barely-used example, that won't be replicated easily:

It's of very rugged construction, Both water & wind-resistant, with a woven collar lining - that has the benefit of being able to be buttoned to the top. Ribbon edging to all hems; large tortashell buttons - and spares.  A  contrasting woven lining in a house black n white hounds tooth, and the micro-quilted rubber-treated gaberdine in a creamy-grey/taupe.

N.B. Pictures 3 & 4, and the final one in outdoor light, give an accurate idea of the colour.

Background

We've been collecting vintage clothes, incl. High Street fashion, and household collectables, for the last 20 years. And we're looking to slim things down, as we're intending to move at the end of 2024.

The vintage items were acquired, with some effort & expense, mostly from London markets and specialist fairs. And always selected carefully, with thought to condition, quality and whether it represented the best of the era - mostly early-mid 60s.

And, as you probably know, the modern High Street - even the higher end, finds it difficult to produce things of this kind of quality. And, the textiles are simply no longer available.

Nothing being offered will be 'tired' or worn-out - be it vintage or otherwise.

And, as we know the disappointment of receive things that are not as presented, will be making every effort to describe things fully and honestly - whilst giving any guidance on sizing we can.

All items being sent clean & ready to wear.

N.B. For any Non-UK buyer all assistance will be given to prevent unnecessary import costs
