Vintage Lakota Sioux Indian Painted Gourd Dance Rattle With Snow Goose Handle & Storm Cloud Decoration, Probably mid-1900's

This Lakota Sioux gourd dance rattle employs the dried seeds within the body to make a strong sound when shaken. The loosely applied painted decoration has stepped storm cloud designs around the body with a row of diamond shapes above. The handle is suggestive of the neck of a snow goose and has nicely delineated eyes with the original gourd stem serving as the beak. The minor wear on this rattle suggests that it has been danced, and was likely made in the mid-1900's.

Condition: Very Good. No damage to gourd body and no repairs. The painted surface has minor wear expected from moderate use and there is wear to the beak of the snow goose handle.

Dimensions: Overall: 13-1/2" long, Gourd body: 3-3/4" wide (maximum diameter), Handle (goose's neck and head): 8" long.
