Up for sale, a 1978 Greco Speed Way GOB1200 bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Produced concurrently with the Ibanez Musician basses at the venerable Fujigen factory in Japan, this flagship Speed Way bass model is finely crafted from an array of premium tonewoods with gold hardware and notable tonal flexibility. This bass features seven-ply maple/walnut neck-through construction with a striped ebony fretboard, and the body wings are crafted from a maple core sandwiched between a sen ash carved top and back. At 12lbs 2oz, this Greco has exceptional natural sustain and sonic authority, with a midrange-forward punch and glassy articulation faithfully captured by the PU-3B humbuckers. These pickups are rich and warm, with a smooth, present sweetness to the trebles and plenty of wooly fullness in the low end. Additionally, the active three-band EQ enables tons of tonal sculpting flexibility, with sounds ranging from bright and intense to massive, thundering thump. This GOB1200 has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 45-105 roundwound strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation. The seven-ply maple/walnut neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges, measuring .840” deep at the 1st fret and .980” at the 12th. The striped ebony fingerboard features gold O-shaped inlay, and the medium jumbo fretwire is practically perfect. This bass plays cleanly up the 34” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the nut measures 1.650” (42mm) in width, carved half from brass and half from bone for optimal clarity and sustain. The headstock sports a sen ash veneer with abalone Greco and harp inlays, and the gold “Speed way” truss rod cover is intact. The tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with clean gold plating, and the back of the headstock retains the small model ID plaque. All of the electronics function as intended, with the pickups governed by a three-way selector switch, Master Volume and Master Tone knobs, the two-way bridge pickup Series/Parallel toggle, an Active/Passive toggle to engage the EQ, and center-detent Bass, Middle, and Treble EQ knobs. The harness has untouched solder joints and full-size Japanese pots, and the active electronics are powered by an internal 9V battery. The original quintet of knobs are present, and the cream switch tip and pickup covers round out the plastics. The gold-plated bridge features a unique top-loader design, threaded into a brass sustain plate, with the strings anchored to individual posts behind the adjustable bridge. Cosmetic wear is limited to one large chip on the back lower bout body edge, some buckle rash central to the back, and a few additional minor marks on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the back. The smooth gloss on the neck profile is immaculate. A gigbag is included.
