  • Common Bilberry, also known as European Blueberry, is a deciduous shrub native to Europe, where it can often be found growing in forests, bogs, and moorlands.
  • Plant grows to between 4 to 18 inches in height and produces small, bell-shaped, white to pink flowers that bloom from May to June.
  • The fruits, which are small, round, and blue-black in color, have a sweet, slightly tart flavor similar to American blueberries. They can be eaten fresh, dried, or used for making jams, jellies, and pies.
  • Direct sow in late fall by lightly pressing the seeds into the soil's surface, as the seeds require light to grow. For spring planting, mix seeds with moist sand and store in refrigerator for 90 days before planting.
  • To start indoors, sow seeds 6-8 weeks before the last expected spring frost. Provide light and keep soil moist until germination, which should occur within 14 to 28 days. Transplant once the danger of frost has passed.
  • 2 to 3 years to maturity.
