A contemporary (i.e. early-mid Victorian) binding of collections from 2 famous botanical publications: The Floral Register of The Botanic Garden & the Auctarium (Continuation) of The Botanic Garden. No date but c. 1845, bound a little later. Associated in different ways with Sydenham Edwards; John Lindley; Benjamin Maund, famous names in the history of Botany & Horticulture. The book contains:
(1) Pages 193- 240, covering Nos. 1534-1917 of different plants each with a thumbnail illustration and a paragraph of info. The last page contains e.g., HYDRANGEA JAPONICA Hardy Shrub from Japan, in 1843, flowers May to July, rose-colour...The plant was imported by Mr. Low, of Clapton....
(2) Pages 1-144, Nos. 1918-3066, similar to (1), a picture and a description. It follows on from (1), see numbers of the plants. This section is headed 'Floral Register of the Botanic Garden', and then a paragraph saying what each entry means, with references to the authorities consulted. This section ends with a FINIS on p. 144. I think we can conclude that these first 2 sections were from different editions of the same work, with the numbering of plants in harmony but not the page numbers.
(3) Pages 233-280: text, with one small illustration (of a flower pot). At the foot of the p. 233 is a small '217 Auctarium': there are numbered sections 217-223; pots, alkalies, plants grown in living rooms, fumigating plants, soils, charcoal, Indian rubber tree, wireworms. Auctarium means Addition/Appendix, which links this section with the previous ones.
(3) Pages 1-144, headed; 'Auctarium of the Botanic Garden': which deals with sections 223 (wireworms cont.) to 333 (strawberries.) Text with some illustrations. Largely advice for the gardener.
