We have for sale a GB 1916 WWI undelivered, double censored cover to Holland and returned to sender. Sent from Swindon on 14 June 1916 to Holland, Netherlands, it was opened and sealed with a white “opened by censor.” numbered 1146 on the way out. The item was returned via London undelivered. It was re-opened on its return and re-sealed with a blue “opened by censor. Return to sender.” number 1213 (in pen) label. An undelivered, ‘for reason stated’ cachet with further information in purple was struck. No obvious reason can be found on the envelope for its return, but has something to do with the censor. The return address at the now grade II listed farm house The Lynch has a penned large capital MLA above it that appears to not tie with the address. |
