Artist Biography
Christopher Assheton-Stones was a master in the art of pastels, and he is regarded as one of the finest pastel artists of the 20th century. Assheton-Stones became fascinated with the medium at a young age, and at 16 exhibited in the Paris Salon. After attending art school in Exeter and Poole, he joined Sotheby's and after three years set up his own business, but all the while followed his passion as an artist. Assheton-Stones was a champion for pastel painting, its versatility and ability to create a powerful picture. He taught and lectured on the subject extensively, inspiring many with this gentle encouragement and clear advice and exhibited throughout the UK and abroad. After settling in the Lake District, where many of his ancestors came from, he devoted himself to depicting the fells and the lakes.
