4pp. letter from an unidentified Union soldier stationed at Fort Reynolds. Written in ink and dated 25 May 1864, letter reads in part: ''…The pair is not paid I have borroughed five dollars of Leed Austin and if enny thing should happen to me I would like to have you pay it to his father which I hope will not be the case but you know it is always best to have every thing setteled. Dear Helen I want you to be a good Daughter to Father and Mother and if it should be my luck to fall in batel remember that my love was as strong and true as a husband and sons could be. Dear Father and Mother if enny thing should happen to me that you should neer see me ware it is my wishes that you would will to Helen when you are then with it what you would give to me. Dear Father you know if it was not in a will Helen would not hold it. Edd is smoking his pipe it is after bed time and I have written enough now do not wory and feel bad about me it will probably be a quite a while before you hear from me again…'' Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Slight soiling, otherwise near fine.
