 TROPICAL PLANTAE
Rainbow

Rainbow Eucalyptus, scientifically known as Eucalyptus deglupta, is a stunning and unique tree known for its striking multicolored bark. It is native to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, but can now be found in various tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The Rainbow Eucalyptus is highly regarded for its aesthetic appeal and is often planted for ornamental purposes.

The most distinctive feature of the Rainbow Eucalyptus is its bark, which undergoes a remarkable transformation as it ages. The bark starts off as a smooth green color, then gradually changes to shades of blue, purple, orange, and maroon, creating a captivating rainbow effect. This stunning display of colors is a result of the shedding of outer bark layers, revealing the vibrant hues underneath.

Aside from its remarkable bark, the Rainbow Eucalyptus is an evergreen tree that can reach impressive heights, often exceeding 200 feet (60 meters). It has long, lance-shaped leaves that are a vibrant shade of green and emit a pleasant aroma when crushed. The tree produces small white flowers and woody fruit capsules, which contain numerous tiny seeds.

Rainbow Eucalyptus trees thrive in warm and humid climates with abundant rainfall. They prefer well-draining soils and full sun exposure to promote optimal growth and development. These trees are fast-growing and require regular watering, especially during dry periods. They can be planted in gardens, parks, or large open spaces where they have room to grow and showcase their beautiful bark.

Caring for Rainbow Eucalyptus trees involves regular pruning to maintain their shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Mulching around the base of the tree can help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. While generally low-maintenance, these trees may require protection from strong winds and frost in colder climates.

Interesting Fact: The Rainbow Eucalyptus is often referred to as the "Mindanao gum" or "Painted gum." Its vibrant bark colors are a result of the shedding of the outer bark layers, exposing the bright pigments underneath. As the bark continues to peel, the colors gradually change, creating an ever-changing spectacle of natural art.

In conclusion, the Rainbow Eucalyptus is a magnificent tree that captivates with its vibrant and ever-changing bark. Its stunning display of colors makes it a popular choice for ornamental planting, adding a touch of tropical beauty to landscapes. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Rainbow Eucalyptus is an important part of its native ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various species. Its presence brings joy to those who appreciate the wonders of nature.

Dead or Alive?

Plants die. So, to determine if your plant is still among the living, scratch a small area of bark on the trunk. You can rub it with a coin or fingernail. If you see brown or black underneath, then the plant is dead. If you see green, then the plant is alive and will leaf out again. If the time is fall through spring, the plant is likely in full or partial dormancy. If the time is during the growing season, then the leaves may have temporarily dropped as a self pruning measure. This acts as a reset switch for the plant and is normally just temporary.
