'The purpose of this book is to make accessible to English readers for the first time the text, transliterated and translated, of all known Assyrian laws; of these far the most important are the so-called 'Middle Assyrian Laws' (c.1450-1250 B.C.) found by the German excavators at Asshur in the course of their work between 1903 and 1914 and published in cuneiform facsimile in 1920. The text is accompanied by an exhaustive legal commentary and detailed philological notes designed to support the translation.'
