*The Word ticking is derived from the Latin word for case, Tica. Ticking fabric was used for creating mattress, as the European bedding system of old, consisted of many layers of textiles stuffed with straw and fodder at the bottom, and topped with a dense denim ( ticking) for the top layers, stuffed with feathers. The fabric came to be known as denim, as Nimes , France was one of the great producers of this ticking fabric...denim ( de Nimes! ) ~ a wonderful fabric for many projects. A wonderful, historical fabric.
