A fantastic vintage country train carriage photo of Bondi Beach, in its original frame & glass.

Country train carriages often displayed scenic photographs of various beauty spots - see last 2 photos for examples of photos in old train carriages. In the early 20th Century the Department of Railways played a central part in intrastate tourism, and such photos helped to create interest in visiting various locations in NSW & Victoria. In the days before widespread car ownership, such journeys would more often than not require a train trip for at least part of the way.

This iconic photo of Bondi on a busy day c.1940's, was almost certainly taken by an Australian Government photographer - see the current exhibition focusing on Australian Government Photographers at the National Archives of Australia.

I've seen a lot of these scenic train carriage photos, but this one is the best I have owned. I think it would make a great gift to someone who lives in Bondi or has an interest in Australian beach culture.

The frame measures 33.5 x 55 cm. Weight 1.6 kg.

Condition: Like most of these old train photos, the condition is fairly well used. The frame and glass are fine but the matte has some creases, stains and slight warps. The photograph is good apart from two small areas of insect damage near the bottom left and top right. Considering the amount of time it was screwed to the roof of a country train (20+ years), the condition is pretty good and adds to its charm.
