The FM168 USSR Space Experiment Container is designed for researching optical materials in open space. At the dawn of space exploration, there was a growing curiosity about how different types of glass behave under the influence of cosmic radiation. Special containers were developed for this purpose, housing samples of various glasses exposed for an extended period in open space on the outer surface of manned spacecraft and orbital stations. The optical properties of the glasses before and after exposure were compared. The research results were utilized to enhance materials used in the production of windows, optical equipment, and so forth. The containers were installed on the "Soyuz-5" spacecraft, remaining exposed in both preparation conditions and open space for approximately 25 hours. After docking in orbit with the "Soyuz-4" spacecraft, the containers were removed and returned to Earth.
