The first edition of this work. Complete in itself in two volumes, but often seen together with Sir H. E. Blumberg's continuation of the history from 1914 to 1919. Written by Colonel Cyril Field, R.M.L.I. With a foreword by Admiral of the Fleet, Earl Beatty.
These volumes contain a detailed history of the Royal Navy from antiquities and up until the outbreak of the First World War.
Illustrated with eleven coloured plates and forty-seven half-tone plates as well as numerous further illustrations in text to volume I. Bound without half-tone plate to face p. 290.
Volume II with twelve coloured plates and forty-five half-tone plates, and many in-text illustrations. Bound without plate to face p. 96.
CONDITION
Library rebound in quarter crushed morocco over cloth covered boards, renewed endpapers. Library shelf number and titles in gilt to spine. Gilt blind stamp to front board vol. I. Externally lovely. Discreet usual library stamps to endpapers and occasional leaf throughout, particularly rear leaves of plates. Coloured plate to face p. 1 vol. I and frontispiece vol. II repaired. Ink proof corrections and marginal annotations to pp. 37, 65-6. 95, and 296 of vol. I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
