Rare Antique “The Gentlewoman" Victorian Print on Silk
LOVE’S SACRIFICE 1897
This is a very rare edition printed by ‘The Gentlewoman’ (a British magazine), as a Christmas Supplement in 1897. Printed in pastel colors on a piece of off white silk, roughly 9 ¾” x 16 ½”. Dimensions of the image are about 8” x 16”.
The print depicts a beautiful woman, in classical dress, with her arm around the waist of a pretty servant girl who is crowning her with a wreath of flowers in a sumptuous marble bath. On the wall behind the pair is a medallion with an inscription in Greek. The illustration was painted by Norman Prescott-Davis, who was a follower of Lord Leighton, a major exponent of Victorian Neo-Classicism. The print's epigraph below the title “Love is a passion which kindles honor into noble acts” is quoted from Dryden.
The printed image is in very good condition considering its age. The piece has been in stored in an acetate sleeve and is a bit wrinkled at the edges. One corner has a bit of staining which does not affect the image. There is tear to the silk which runs through the lettering at the bottom. This print is very fragile and should be professionally framed.
