Tony Iommi (b. 19 Feb. 1948) is a British guitarist best known as a co-founder of heavy metal band Black Sabbath. He was their primary composer & sole continuous member for nearly 5 decades. He formed Black Sabbath in '68 with drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler & vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. Often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music, they had multiple line-up changes after Osbourne's departure in ’79. They distinguished themselves through occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics & down-tuned guitars. Their 1st single,Evil Woman from debut album Black Sabbath ('70) received negative critical response but the album was a commercial success. Their popularity grew & by ‘73's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, critics were responding favorably. Osbourne's substance abuse led to his firing in ’79 & replacement with Ronnie James Dio. In the ‘80s & ‘90s members included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen & Tony Martin, as well as various drummers & bassists. In ‘98 the band's original line-up reunited & released live album Reunion. They continued to tour until 2005. Final studio album 13 (2013), featured all the original members except Ward. MTV ranked them the Greatest Metal Band of all time & Rolling Stone magazine ranked them #85 on their 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 & the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. The band played their final concert in 2017. They have 2 Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance & in 2019 were presented a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Black Sabbath have sold over 70 million records, making them 1 of the most successful heavy metal bands in history!
