About Artist :

Huang Gongwang (September 12, 1269 – November 10, 1354) was a painter of the Yuan Dynasty. Self proclaimed from Pingyang, Zhejiang. Tao Zongyi's "Record of Dropping out Farming" refers to him as "originally surnamed Lu", who succeeded the Huang family in Pingyang, Wenzhou as his adopted son. Due to changing his surname to Huang, he was named Gongwang, with the character "Zi Jiu" and the names "Yifeng" and "Dachi Taoist". [1-2]

Huang Gongwang served as a clerk in the Central Taiwan Procuratorate and was once imprisoned; Afterwards, he joined Quanzhen Sect and traveled to Hangzhou, Songjiang, and other places to sell divination; In his later years, he lived in Shaojiquan, Hangzhou. Emperor Shun of Yuan passed away on October 25th, 1354, at the age of 85.

Huang Gongwang is skilled in calligraphy, proficient in melody, and skilled in poetry, prose, and music. He is particularly skilled in painting landscapes and has been instructed by Zhao Mengfu. His lineages include Dong Yuan, Juran, Jing Hao, Guan Tong, Li Cheng, and others. Both ink and light crimson are used in the painting, using the unique calligraphy technique of grass and Zhou. The style is majestic and elegant, and the brushstrokes are simple and complete. It has established its own family and has been praised for its "lush peaks and lush vegetation". Ranked first among the "Four Schools of the Yuan Dynasty" (Huang Gongwang, Wu Zhen, Ni Zan, Wang Meng). Paintings that have been passed down from generation to generation include "Dwelling in Fuchun Mountain", "Clear and Quiet Water Pavilion", "Tianchi Stone Wall", "Nine Peaks After Snow", "Fuchun Great Ridge", and so on. He is the author of a painting theory called "The Secret to Writing Mountains and Rivers".
