With French text on verso. -- in good condition. --With this exceptional pocket edition of the «Theatrum Orbis Terrarum», the publisher, a son of Peter Heyns, wished to thank Walter del Prato, a Cologne merchant, for marrying his niece. He presented this «Miroir du monde» as an enlargement of his father's bestseller and a tribute to him. But, instead of the common choice for copperplates, he illustrated the atlas with woodcuts, not based on the father's pocket atlas but on the original maps by Ortelius. "All of the maps for this work are woodcuts. It was one of the last atlases produced using this medium... "The atlas and its maps are rarely found" (Burden). The atlas is considered as "the most mysterious atlas of the entire Dutch atlas production."
