Jules Jürgensen pocket watch captain's watch

Extremely rare 18k gold captain's watch with two time zones, independet stopable center seconds and small constant seconds; circa 1849.

White enamel dial, two decentralized time divisions, large central second with 1/5 second graduation, small constant seconds, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the seconds. Original, very filigree, blued Breguet hands. Hands and dial are beautifully preserved.

Case, 18k yellow gold, engine-turned and milled case band,, pendant with opening button and round bow, cover with Jürgensen's case punch mark "JJ" and 18k, case No. 6238. Cuvette with edge guilloche, signed "Jules Jürgensen Copenhagen" and engraved "R. M. Funkhouser". Spring lid with double springs. The guilloche is evenly worn. A small pusher in the case at 12 o'clock is used to start and stop the independent central seconds hand. The movement is in fully functional condition.

Bridge movement, frosted and gilt, keywind, two barrels, independent stoppable seconds movement, anchor escapement by Jules Jürgensen with ring-shaped counterweight, gold screw compensation balance. The jewel bearings for the lever and escape wheel are set in gold chatons. Blued Breguet balance spring and Lepine fine regulation. The seconds button is locked when the cover is closed. The movement is in fully functional condition.

Dr. Robert Monroe Funkhouser was a very prominent businessman from St. Louis (USA) who was for a time president of the Chamber of Commerce and one of the directors of the Gas Consumers Co. of St. Louis. He operated several businesses from St. Louis to New York.
