Lapel Pin Made from Old Brass Hull of Cutty Sark Clipper Ship Greenwich England

This is a lapel pin created from Muntz Metal (a brass alloy) which was on the Cutty Sark ship's hull. The Cutty Sark is the last tea clipper ship in the world and is in dry dock in Greenwich, England. During a restoration project 2006-2012 the brass was removed from the ship. This pin is created from some of that brass.  The copper pin measures 5/8" x 1/2" and has a clutch back. The copper has verdigris patina and is a one--of-a-kind. The Cutty Sark made many voyages around the world carrying cargoes of tea, wool, coal and other goods in the 1800's. It is said to have traveled a distance equal to 2 1/2 times to the moon and back. The ship's figure head is a lovely young girl holding a horse's tail. She is the character in the famous poem by Robert Burns' "Tam-o-Shanter".   My photos are of the actual item you are getting. More about The Cutty Sark and Muntz Metal...The metal in these pieces was taken from the actual "Cutty Sark" ship's hull. The hull of the Cutty Sark is sheathed in Muntz Metal...a replacement for copper patented in 1832 by George Frederick Muntz. In the old days ship hulls were sheathed in copper as a way of preventing damage from the sea water. Muntz Metal was a new alloy that replaced copper at around 2/3 of the cost and soon became the material of choice for this application in the early 1800's. The alloy is 60% copper, 40% zinc and a trace of iron. The Cutty Sark was a merchant clipper ship that sailed all over the world transporting all kinds of cargo...especially tea. The Cutty Sark was built in 1869. Originally Muntz copper hull plating from the clipper was removed during restoration in 2007 and before the fire on board destroyed most of the clipper (now restored and is in dry dock in Greenwich, England).  Expect scratches and scuffs as this was on the bottom of a ship! My last photo was one I took of the ships hull at the museum.
