SC-101 ** PCGS VF30 ** £50 June 1, 1775 South Carolina Colonial Currency Note

  • Very Rare & Choice despite the given "Apparent" grade, June 1, 1775 "Fifty Pounds Current Money" South Carolina Colonial Currency Note. This is the highest denomination of this issue, with the lowest original printing total of just 6,000 notes. It is the rarest and most desirable of the four different denominations of this 1775 issue date.
  • Very conservatively graded & certified by PCGS as VF30 Apparent, with the mention of "Edge Splits and Damage; Stains; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back". All of which are somewhat minor to non-existent.
  • Rare in the fact that PCGS has graded a few of these, but all of them are apparent graded with some sort of problem except for one single example. That problem-free example is graded a very modest VF30. So, any attractive looking 50 Pound note is desirable. This PCGS VF30 Apparent SC-101 is very attractive with minimal problems, and is one of the highest graded.
  • Likewise, PMG has graded just a total of (13) examples so far with the highest graded also being a single note at VF25. Most, if not all, have damage issues and/or are net graded. This PCGS VF30 is graded higher than any PMG example of a SC-101.
  • On the front side is a bold rendition of a seal that is described by Newman as thus: "Woman frightened by a storm and standing next to a tree" with the Latin motto POST TENEBRAS LUX (After the darkness light).
  • The back displays an intricate design with the motto "FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD".
  • Bold 4-digit serial number 3791 in brown ink along with the equally bold written signatures of Thomas Corbett, Willaim Parker, Thomas Middleton, John Neufville, Peter Bacot, and (lightly) William Gibbes along the vertical centerfold.
  • These large format (about 7" wide x 4" high) were printed on very thin weak fine laid paper that was often folded to fit into a patriot's wallet, and then unfolded many times as it circulated. The result is that only a handful have survived the past 249 years, and the few that have, all seem to have problems such as tears, edge splits, etc. This example is visually the nicest I've seen in the past 20+ years with the bold & complete seal, full text, bold serial number and all six signatures, and an appealing left indent border.
  • Newman lists a price of $1,750 for an example in VF20 condition. This note is 10 points better.
  • An authentic & historical item that was printed in 1775 and issued very near the beginning of the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), and a little over a year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
  • Free Insured USPS Priority Mail with Signature Confirmation (trackable) to anywhere in the United States.
