Harpers Ferry National Historical Park commemorates the site in West Virginia as historically significant to the Founding Fathers in that Thomas Jefferson was said to have often appreciated the commanding view of the Shenandoah River and its confluence with the Potomac from Jefferson Rock. The site is also pivotal to the abolition of slavery and the Civil War, in that John Brown's Fort, a stockpile of weapons he amassed in pursuit of freeing the slaves was housed here.
