"To Ancient Egyptians, maat described a set of principles for living an ethical, moral life, as well as the general concept for truth, justice and harmony. These same concepts were personified by the goddess Maat, who was often depicted with wings and a feather headpiece. The Egyptians believed that when they died, their hearts would be weighed against Maat's feather, and the result would indicate how virtuous their life had been. If the judgement was bad, their heart would be devoured by the demon goddess Ammit, and their souls condemned to remain in the underworld forever.
