IRISH CELTIC/TRADITONAL FOUR MEMBER BAND,
PLAYED AT "IRELAND'S FOUR PROVINCES" IN WASHINGTON DC in late 1970's and 1980's.

January 2, 1984  The Washington Post
WHEN Brendan Sheridan arrived in New York from his native Ireland
in 1971, he had never played professionally.

"I just walked up to a band playing this bar on 53rd Street
and asked if they needed a banjo player. They said,
'How did you know we need a banjo player?'
I started that night. Count Basie was playing a couple of doors down."
Sheridan pauses to take a swig of beer, and grins.
"I said, 'This must be one great bloody country if I can play next door to Count Basie!' "

Sheridan, 39, now plays with the Irish Breakdown, a band he started 7 1/2 years ago
with Brad Hayford, whom he met in New York.
Hayford, 35, a former mechanical engineer for Eastman Kodak,
left his job to pursue a career in music.
He plays an unusual but effective combination of electric bass and harmonica.

Hayford and Sheridan double on guitar and accordion,
respectively, and sing--Hayford arranging the often complex
vocal harmonies that characterize the band's sound.

The group's arrangements of traditional folk, Irish and popular songs
are intricate and fun, punctuated with sly instrumentals,
 humorous banter--and plenty of clapping.
The nature of the music invites audience participation,
and they encourage it.The music swings from Buddy Holly to
"Foggy Mountain Breakdown," which becomes "Fox on the Run"
in the twinkling of a note. Teeple is a born storyteller,
and Sheridan has a bard's sensitivity for delivering ballads.
Hayford's harmonica sounds as sweet and lively as any fiddle.
The effect is warm and invigorating.

"When I met Brendan," says Hayford, "I knew right off
that our voices and approach to the music
were complementary. We called the band, 'Irish Breakdown,'
because it indicated how we were approaching each other:
I was going from bluegrass to Irish, and Brendan from Irish to bluegrass."
