Antique German Glass Beer Stein Friedrich III Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth Statue c.1840s

Description:

A classical German glass beer stein from the period of late Biedermeier 1820s - to 1850s. Beer steins made before 1850 fall into the "early" category - they were made in pre-industrial period using manual techniques and old technologies.

Blown crystal glass with applied thick handle. Wide pedestal with large pontil mark. Stylized acorn thumblift and five-ring closed type hinge - all typical for the late Biedermeier period.

The stein was hand-blown and elaborately stone-cut to create round and oval facets for a beautiful optical effect. This type of glass beer steins were made in the German state of Saxony in 1820s-1850s.

The lid shows a medallion with a statue of Friedrich III, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth (1711-1763). He was considered to be an enlightened monarch. In Bayreuth, Frederick is referred to as "the Beloved." In his residence of Bayreuth, he promoted the sciences and arts. He established the margraviate's Regional University in Bayreuth in 1742, which was moved one year later, in 1743, to Erlangen that bears his name until today. The statue on the lid of the stein is the statue that was made and put in front of Erlangen university in 1843 - I feel quite certain that the stein was made to commemorate this event and was created about 1843.
